Calcium sulfate whiskers themselves have excellent mechanical properties, compatibility, and appropriate interfacial bonding strength, which are conducive to better strengthening and toughening effects of cementation. Calcium sulfate whiskers are ultrafine fiber materials, and their main mechanisms when added to cement are load transfer, crack bridging, crack deflection, and pull-out effects. The results showed that by adding 5% calcium sulfate whiskers, the flexural and compressive strength of the mortar samples were increased by 28.3% and 8.5% respectively. In addition, the chemical composition and structural transformation of the cement matrix hardened with calcium sulfate whiskers were identified by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It can be concluded that calcium sulfate whiskers can effectively prevent the formation of microcracks and limit their aggregation. The harmless porosity in cement increased from 9.33% to 10.62%, and the harmful porosity decreased from 2.08% to 1.90%. Calcium sulfate whiskers can optimize the pore size distribution of cement.
